people fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN). It’s on the mainland, only about six miles from the southern tip of Cancun Island, where the Hotel Zone is. Quite a few American and Mexican carriers offer frequent direct flights from various cities in the United States, often daily. Flights come from other cities in Mexico, too. It’s only about an hour and a half from Miami, six hours from New York or Toronto, 8 hours from Los Angeles, and 17 hours from London.

Some tips for getting a good price on your Cancun air fare:

Shop around. Use the internet.

Be flexible about what days of the week you will fly to and from Cancun. There are specials that are less on certain days.

Consider a vacation package, where your airfare and hotel are combined. Do a little homework on the hotels offered, to be sure you’ll enjoy staying there. Many extremely nice hotels do take part in packages, and you might be able to stay in a much fancier place by taking advantage of vacation packages.

Students going for spring break should look over the variety of packages offered to them. Many of these are charter flights.

Local buses and taxis

You can easily get around with the inexpensive buses that go up and down the Hotel Zone and into downtown. There are plenty of taxis, too; ask the rate before getting in, as the rates are determined by a set of zones that exist.

Driving to Cancun from the U.S.

It’s a long way, and many of the roads are quite slow. Read my description of our trip along part of the highway from Texas.

Taking long-distance buses in Mexico

Mexico has outstanding long-distance bus service, but it’s a mighty long way from the U.S. But if you’re touring Mexico by bus anyway, then you know what’s involved in riding the buses. Cancun is about 20 hours by bus from Mexico City. If you arrive in Cancun by air, you might want to take bus trips to other destinations in the Yucatan.

The business of real estate in Cancun has some features that will make it seem familiar. There is a multiple listing service. Some of the company names will be familiar: Century 21 and RE/MAX have offices there. Some of the properties are offered with financing, rare in most of Mexico. Prices may be listed in dollars or in Euros.

Much of the action is outside of Cancun, too, going along the coast in what’s called the Maya Riviera. Areas that were sleepy fishing villages a few years ago are building up.

As soon as you start exploring what’s available in Cancun, you will likely notice that condos are offered on a time-share basis, often for two or three weeks. Find out about occupancy rates and how they affect your costs. Do some arithmetic and see how your costs would compare with staying in a hotel. In general, time shares are a better investment for the builders than for the people who buy them.

There are many other kinds of real estate investments too. Apartments, houses, villas, townhomes, hotels and other commercial properties are all offered. In land, you can find residential or commercial lots, including beachfront lots suitable for building hotels. Whatever your tastes in Cancun real estate, it’s out there.

If you are looking for an inexpensive bargain or a secluded spot likely to remain quiet, you will do better elsewhere in Mexico. And wherever you look, don’t miss my page of tips on buying Mexican real estate.

Summer all year… gorgeously turquoise ocean… sandy white beaches… shopping from Mexican handicrafts to designer clothes… stunning hotels with interesting architecture, many right on the beach… world-class restaurants… nightlife and dance clubs that go till early morning… Mayan ruins in the middle of it all… that’s Cancun!

Water sports include swimming, surfing, diving, boating, fishing, kayaking, and snorkeling. Day trips to Mayan archaeological sites offer you a glimpse of the fascinating civilization that was in the area for centuries.

No wonder Cancun is one of the most popular beach resorts in all of North and South America! With over three million visitors a year, the folks in Cancun have figured out how to provide what you want for a memorable vacation, whether it’s total relaxation, going out dancing, water sports, enjoying spring break or a honeymoon, or whatever.

Cancun’s history is short. In the early 1970s, the Mexican government had a study done to decide where to put a new resort. A little piece of land in the Caribbean sea, just off the coast of Yucatan, was chosen. It didn’t take long before tourists were coming in ever-increasing numbers. Now Cancun (on the mainland just opposite that slip of land) has a population of something over half a million — and the visitors keep coming!

Cancun is its own kind of place. It’s hardly typical Mexico, but it’s a lot of fun in its own way. Despite the considerable destruction from Hurricane Wilma in 2005, the city and region quickly rebuilt.

Cancun Island is almost 15 miles long but only about a quarter of a mile wide. It’s known as the Hotel Zone, and there are dozens and dozens of hotels — with an incredible variety of architecture. They are landscaped and furnished with flair. Just touring the hotels can be a vacation activity in itself.

Some of the hotels in the Hotel Zone are: Calinda Beach, Calinda Viva, Camino Real,Casa Turquesa, Club Internacional, Club Med, Continental Plaza Cancun, El Pueblito, Fiesta Americana, Flamingo, Hilton Beach & Golf Resort, Holiday Inn Express, Hyatt Cancun Caribe, Hyatt Regency, J.W. Marriott, Krystal Cancun, Le Meridien, Marriott Casa Magna, Melia Cancun, Melia Turquesa,Miramar Mision, Oasis and Grand Oasis,Oasis Playa, Omni, Presidente Inter-Continental, Sheraton Resort & Towers, Sierra, Solymar, The Ritz-Carlton, The Royal Resorts, The Royal Sands, The Westin Regina Resort, and Villas Tacul.

With so many hotels, each one tries to stand in different ways. Some are more secluded, while others are in the heart of everything. Two hotels flank some Mayan ruins you can only reach via their access. Rooms are designed to take advantage of the views of the Caribbean and of the Nichupte Lagoon, between the island and the mainland. You can swim in both waters, though the lagoon is calmer — flags are used on the beaches to indicate the condition of the surf. Tennis and golf are available. There are spas, restaurants, nightspots, and shopping, all in the the Hotel Zone. You can have your entire Cancun vacation right there!

Some hotels are all-inclusive… that is, meals, activities, entertainment, and perhaps drinks are included in the price you pay.

Taking the family? There are hotels that cater particularly to families, and many of the others offer a lot of features for children.

As well as in the Hotel Zone, there are hotels in the city of Cancun, which is a short bus or taxi ride from the Caribbean sea. This is where the least expensive rooms are likely to be found.

In all, there are about 150 hotels in the whole Cancun area, with over 25,000 rooms in all price ranges. Even more hotels are along the coastline away from this area.

Cancun hotels fill up quickly during the week before and after Easter. Another popular time is Spring Break, from approximately late February to late April. So book early for those times, and for Christmas too.
